I've been following this brother who owns a New Zealand based construction company on twitter - he has what I think are some innovative and unquie housing options which I think should be considered - He uses old shipping containers to build affordable multi unit dwellings - he's only available on twitter for now but I think its worth considering - here's the link to his twitter page==>https://twitter.com/JConstructions_

Just an aside, looking into solar power energy that can help solve home energy consumption needs. The use of underground heat storage systems is also another interesting potential of utilizing what may have been wasted energy.

Just to add to the idea of energy independence - an independent power generation stack may be an option - this would combine wind, solar, and thermal( if available) but definitely wind and solar - each home/structure would be independent of any type of centralized grid - of course storage of the energy generated by the stack could be an issue - I know tesla currently has wall mounted battery units available commercially - there may be alternatives to the tesla storage units - I'll look into to it
I wanted to buy one the mansions in south africa , but these loook reallly cool
These look fanatastic. They actually have individuals living out of containers in Ghana. Not in the modern versions of it, just a regular container.
I guess our biases will come out one way or the other. But!...nothing against the innovation provided by the South African builder. I agree w/Dwayne. Architecture, when viewing the sad historical context of our unique past experiences of housing in amerika, must originate from within the Afrikstani culture (my opinion). This would create an opportunity for us to define "our" preferences for functional, prosperous lifestyles from "our" perspectives rather than have something imposed on us or handed down by others. Architectural design as defined from Afrikstani culture would be a new beginning for a new way of living.
Customized Container homes they are definitely a trend but to meet our standards the must be like this
I saw those years ago they are a great idea but we have to train our own architects and construction crews because top designers of container homes cost a fortune. They are perfect for off grid living like homesteads farms camping grounds and communal communities off grid
You can do some serious vertical farming with a whole neighborhood of those containers. Good stuff
