This man by the name of Melvin Smith was a body guard of Martin Luther King Jr. He gave a nice presentation over what his experience was like during the Civil Rights Era. I was fortunate enough to meet with him after the talk to share my thoughts to him on King's legacy and assassination. Alot of folks like to sanitize King as a desegregationist and pacifist. However, he was more than that he was a martyr and prophet (he made mistakes though like many of us do), yet he vehemently disgreed with the Vietnam War, he strongly believed in black empowerment educationally and socially. In addition, he even believed blacks deserved reparations due to the root causes of white supremacy which disenfranchised blacks economically (even today). So let's remember him for who was an advocate for equality, justice, and FREEdom. RIP to MLK Jr, to his wife Coretta Scott King (Mother/Queen of the Civil Rights Movement), and his mother Alberta King (who was also assassinated, unfortunately). #saluted #BlackHistory365
